OUR HOME

Hardin County, Kentucky, is a place with a rich history that has shaped the region into what it is today. The county is located in the central part of the state and is home to over 110,000 residents. The county seat is Elizabethtown, which is also the largest city in the county. Hardin County's history dates back to the late 18th century, and since then, it has played a vital role in shaping the state's history. In this blog post, we will explore the fascinating history of Hardin County, Kentucky.

The Civil War

During the Civil War, Hardin County played a crucial role in the Union Army's efforts. The county was strategically located between two major Confederate strongholds, Bowling Green and Nashville. In September 1861, Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner took control of Bowling Green and established a defensive line along the Green River. The Union Army, led by General Don Carlos Buell, marched south from Louisville and engaged the Confederates in a series of battles, culminating in the Battle of Perryville in October 1862. The Union Army eventually drove the Confederates out of the area, and Hardin County remained under Union control for the remainder of the war.

Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace

Perhaps the most famous landmark in Hardin County is the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park. The park is located near Hodgenville, Kentucky, and is the site where Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. The park features a replica of the log cabin where Lincoln was born, as well as a museum and visitor center.

Lincoln lived in Kentucky until the age of seven when his family moved to Indiana. However, his early years in Kentucky had a significant impact on his life, and he always held a special place in his heart for the state. In fact, during the Civil War, Kentucky was a border state that remained neutral, and Lincoln worked hard to keep it in the Union.

Post-Civil War and Beyond

After the Civil War, Hardin County experienced significant growth and development. The county's location along the Louisville and Nashville Railroad made it an attractive destination for businesses and settlers. The town of Elizabethtown grew rapidly, and by the late 1800s, it had become a major center for agriculture and industry. Today Hardin County is booming and in addition to its growing population it now houses the 2nd highest number of U.S. Military veterans in the state.
